Getting Free Publicity
1. Book yourself to give speeches about your product or service. Target Rotary International, Chambers of Commerce and other civic and community groups.
2. Volunteer your time to a local nonprofit organization. Hand your card out to all co-workers.
3. Develop a web site that’s packed with useful facts.
4. Write letters to the editor that pertain to your business and send them to your local and citywide newspapers. Sign with your name and web site address.
5. All businesses have slow times. Get business by calling old clients for referrals.
6. Ask for spillover work from larger businesses in your field.
7. Send a tip sheet to different publications giving them tips in your area of expertise, and signing off with your name and a link to your website.
8. Call TV newsrooms and piggyback on the news.
For example, if you own a car repair garage, you might explain how a faulty mechanism caused a car crash. Then, offer ways for viewers to avoid such an accident.
9. Call radio shows. Tell them your field of expertise and volunteer to be a guest.
10. Tie your work into any holiday. For example:
You’re a florist and you’re making an unusual floral arrangement for Valentine’s Day. Call the Photo Desk of your local newspaper before the big day, ask to send out a photographer to take a picture of your arrangement and run it on February 14.
